Adding a Touch of Class to Your Living Room
When you are planning or redecorating your living room, it is important to work out the kind of look that you want. There are many styles that you could choose from – from minimalist to classical style or from mock Victorian to Mediterranean décor. Your choices will be influenced by the following factors:
Your budget. Don’t forget that the various materials that you use all have their cost. So when you are considering different materials, you need to sit down and work out a price list and then see whether you have the resources to pay for them. Never go beyond your means, and if you decide to take a loan for redecorating, make sure that you can pay it back.
Personal preference. This is extremely important. For example, even if minimalist décor is highly fashionable and everyone around you is decorating their homes that way, if you can’t stand it you should not feel that you have to decorate the room in that style. After all, you are the person living in your home, so you need to be happy with whatever you choose.
Who lives in your home and how it is used. One major example of this is when you choose flooring materials. If you have young children, you would probably prefer carpet flooring or putting down area rugs rather than using stone flooring because these materials are softer. Therefore, your babies won’t get so bruised when they fall down while learning to walk.
Are the furnishings and flooring ideas easy to clean? This is also important when it comes to redecorating or redesigning a room, and especially the living room, which is one of the most public areas of your home. Wood flooring, for example, is not easy to clean because exposure to water can cause severe damage.
When decorating a room, it is often the devil that is in the details. To add a real touch of class, it is not only the major parts of the room, such as the floor, walls, overall color scheme, and heavy furniture that are important. Neat accessories are often what add that extra touch to make it look good. Therefore, it is a good idea to find a theme or idea to complete the look.
Good, useful accessories include vases of flowers (either real or silk), scented candles, and beautiful wall hangings. For example, if you have dark wooden furniture, you might like to add a Chinese silk screen, which will give a touch of color to the room and make it look somewhat exotic. If, however, you are into accessories, remember not to overload the room. Too many accessories can make the room look overcrowded. Therefore, you should make your choices carefully and tastefully.
Last but not least, don’t forget the light fittings. This is especially important in the living room, which is such a public part of your home. Your choices will be affected by how much natural lighting the room has, the color scheme, and the general atmosphere you want to convey.
